Two years after their son died, Alex and Kate Fitzgerald accept an invitation they might have read more carefully: a stay at a secluded estate in the shadow of Split Rock Lighthouse, on Lake Superior's North Shore. Kate, who has just lost her mother too, hopes the quiet will help hold their marriage together. Alex hopes for a decent beer and an uneventful week.
The grounds are beautiful, and something about them is wrong. A wild-eyed man comes running out of the woods to tell Alex that "the Reflectory isn't finished, it's never finished, it needs someone," and warns him about a Tin Man. An antique boat of a most unusual design hangs on chains in the boathouse. A door that seems to open onto solid stone stays locked. And the estate's murdered owner, a revered genius, has left behind notes in Latin and a guestbook entry that hint at something Isaac Newton made and never told anyone about.
Alex has always noticed what other people miss: the pattern under the noise, the shape of a thing before it becomes a thing. At Gold Rock Point, that turns out to matter more than he'd like.
The Reflectory is a story about grief and marriage and the texture of ideas: the contour of a thought, the color of an emotion, and finding the one thing missing in your life without knowing you were looking for it. It is also, now and then, about where to get lunch in Two Harbors.
